The Trump Effect

One cannot work in America after getting a master's degree?

After getting a master’s degree a student is permitted to work in America for a period of one year, which is extendable to three years, if he is from the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) category. A work permit (H1B visa) is not required for such students.

Getting an H1B visa has become more difficult after the election of Donald Trump

Not at all. Students with an American degree can avail of a special quota, of 20,000 H1B visas. In addition to this quota they can also apply for the general quota comprising 65,000 H1B visas.

The new merit-based immigration policy is being formulated which will give priority to students with American degrees for H1B visas.

President Trump intends to restrict the H1B visa to Indians.

There is no restrictions specific to India.

President Trump is planning to give more weightage to highly skilled workers holding American degrees.

There is a lack of job opportunities in America at present.

Currently, America has the lowest unemployment rate which has dipped to an unprecedented 4.1 percent. Therefore, students getting degrees from good universities still manage to find jobs within a few months of graduating.

Students of Dilip Oak’s Academy invariably join only accredited and well-known universities. Most of them find jobs in the US quite easily.

What if I do not get the H1B visa at the first attempt?

You can apply for H1B visa once a year. If you are from the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) category you can apply for visa thrice, since the OPT period for STEM students is for three years. Non STEM students can apply only once.

If a close relative of mine is working in the US on H1B visa, does that hinder my chances on the visa?

No. It will not affect your chances.

Are there any updates on the salary cap of $1,30,000/- for H1B visa?

There is no such rule neither it is likely to be announced in the near future till the US Government finalize new immigration policies.

What happens if the green card process is not initiated within 6 years after getting H1B?

If the Green Card is not initiated within 6 years after getting H1B visa, student will be required to return to the home country.

Is there any amendment to issue H1B visa?

There is no such amendment till date and no such possibility in the near future.

The GRE Test

When is the right time to appear for the GRE, during bachelor's or after graduation? How long is the score valid?

Ideally, the GRE test should be taken during the third year. If not possible at least in the first semester of the final year so that the students can join US university immediately after completing his graduation. The GRE test score is valid for 5 years.

I am completing BE in 2019.When should I start preparing for the GRE and MS admission?

You can join our GRE coaching anytime between July 2018 to July 2019. The admission procedure will follow from that point onwards.

How many times can I appear for the GRE test?

You can apply for GRE as many times as you wish to. You can report the best score to the University out of all attempts. A maximum of 5 attempts is allowed within 1 calendar year.

When should I give GRE? Is it okay if I give it in the month of September? What is the deadline if I want to go for Fall 2019?

Ideally, you should take the GRE up to December 2018 or latest by January 2019.

I am in the final year and planning to go for higher studies in America. Should I concentrate more on my engineering or prepare for BE and the GRE test simultaneously

We recommend students to take the GRE test during the third year of engineering. This enables them to prepare well for the GRE test and also concentrate on their academics.

Do you provide online training for the GRE test?

Admission Requirements

To what extent does a backlog affect the dream of higher education?

Students with backlogs can also get admission but in a relatively lower ranked university.

How important is work experience while applying for masters

Relevant work experience at least for one year is strongly recommended. It will help to get better university and a good job after MS.

Savitribai Phule Pune University has SGPA/CGPA marking system instead of percentage for engineering batches after 2015. How do the US universities calculate marks for such students?

Conversion of marks is not required. You can report SGPA/CGPA to the US universities which are acceptable to them.

Can I apply for MBA in the US on the basis of my GRE score? Is work experience in a start-up considered for MS/MBA programs ?

Majority US universities accept the GRE score for admission to MBA course. Work experience in start-ups can be considered.

Will research publication help me in getting a scholarship from US university?

Yes, research publication will help to some extent provided it is in a magazine of an international reputation.

Can students with 15 years of education apply for MS in America? Do universities accept only 16 years of education? I have completed BCA in India which is 15 years course.

16 years (12+4) of formal education is mandatory. Students completing a three-year degree course should complete masters in India and then apply. However, if you get your mark sheets evaluated from World Education Services (WES) and if they recognize your degree equivalent to a four-year Indian degree, then you can apply for a master’s program.

Despite having 4+ years of work experience in IT is it a good idea to go for average / mid-level universities? (MSCS)

Yes, even if you join an average university you can get a very good job after MS since you have relevant work experience for more than 2 years.

Are extra-curricular activities important while applying for admissions? Eg: For ex-sportsmen.

Extra-curricular activities related to academics like paper presentations, projects, participation in seminars and internships are important for selection criteria. Participation in cultural activities and sports are not as relevant.

I have completed a 3 year B.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Pune with 72.5% aggregate. Is a 3 year degree a drawback?

Majority of American universities require 16 years of formal education (4-years Bachelor's degree). However, some lower-ranking universities do accept 3-years Bachelor's degree as well.

What are the other factors apart from the GRE score required for university acceptance?

Four factors are important for getting admission into US universities.

  • GRE Score
  • Academic Record in Engineering degree
  • Relevant work experience
  • Financial ability of candidate

Can you get admitted into a top university with an average GPA but great GRE score?

The GPA is equally important. Only high GRE score does not guarantee admission to top universities.

German Universities Admission Requirements

When should I Learn German language? Should I join German language class in the first year of engineering?

Ideally, you should join German language coaching in the first year so that you can complete A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels till you complete your bachelor’s degree. This will enable you to have a good command over the German language and you can apply for the masters course in full German language which do not charge tuition fees.

Are GATE and GRE scores acceptable by German Universities for admission?

Some universities in Germany do accept the GATE score. However, the TU9 universities strongly recommend the GRE test score.

What level of German language proficiency is required to be cleared for education in Germany?

Majority of universities require A-2 level.

Is it difficult to get an education loan if both the parents are retired? Can a senior citizen sponsor?

Yes, retired parents can get the loan if they have property to mortgage.

Which country has better employment chances after MS? USA, Canada or Germany?

Employment opportunities in are similar in all three countries.

Are there any opportunities for the students interested in seeking degree other than a science stream?

You can apply for MS in all fields (technical, humanities, arts, management, etc.)

What are the available options after completing B.Pharm degree?

You can apply for MS in pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, pharma administration and biotechnology.

Which country has better employment chances after MS?USA or Germany?

Employment opportunities in the US and Germany are the same.

Are there campus recruitments in the US while a student is completing MS at US university?

Yes, most of the US universities have job fairs generally twice in a year where many companies recruit students.

When should I enroll for admission counseling if I want to apply for fall (August) 2019 semester?

You should join our admission counseling any time after July 2018, but preferably before January 2019.

I wish to pursue MS in computer science. I have a work experience of five years.Is work experience an added advantage? Also is there an age limit to apply for MS in the US?

Gaining work experience is definitely an added advantage. There is no age limit to take the GRE or to apply for a master's course in USA or Germany.

Can a student with a bachelor's degree from other engineering fields apply for MS in computer science?

Students from any engineering stream can apply for computer science. But they will have to take pre-requisite courses which will extend their course by one semester. Similarly, higher ranked universities prefer students with bachelor’s degree in computers. Relevant work experience in the IT sector would be an added advantage.

Could you give any idea about location-based job opportunities?

For computer science California, Washington, New York and Texas are preferred locations. For mechanical engineering Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York are the preferred locations.

If I have a gap of one year after completing B.E., will it affect my chances of getting admission?

No. It will not affect your chances of getting an admission.

Which are some good universities for MS in Mechanical Engineering?

What is the minimum bank balance required to be shown for US VISA application?

There is no specific bank balance required. You can apply even on basis of education loan.

What is the Scope in America for the following?
- Management (MBA)
- Combined Technical + Management (MEM)
- Architecture

MBA and Architecture are non-STEM degree. Jobs are possible. However, work permit is a matter of chance since candidate can participate in H1B lottery only once.

Is their any Scholarship available in India for higher education?

Such scholarships and fellowships are available for which you will find information on the internet. Some examples are Tata Scholarship Fund/JN Tata Endowment, KC Mahindra Education Trust, Leela Poonawala Foundation and India Foundation.

What are the job opportunities in Civil Engineering or scope for a career in Civil Engineering in the US?

Jobs are available in all the technical fields. Civil Engineering students can also opt for Construction Engineering and Management courses.

What are Mechanical Engineering prospects in Canada as compared to USA and Germany?

There are good employment opportunities in Germany but limited scope in Canada.

It is necessary to do a job for one year for higher education in America?

Though it is not compulsory, we strongly recommend relevant work experience of at least 1 year.

Does stream change matter in pursuing higher education in US? (Students from engineering stream in India applying for MS in USA)

Theoretically changing of stream is possible but only in certain fields. For example, students from any engineering background can apply for Industrial Engineering. Any engineer with adequate work experience and basic knowledge of computers can apply for Master in Information Science or Data Science or Business Analytics. Also, any engineer with relevant work experience in Computer Science can apply for Masters in the same field.

Is there any advantage of going to US in fall semester over spring semester?

There are three advantages to this:

  • Student can do internship in summer-break only after completing 2 semesters. This is possible only if he joins Fall Semester.
  • All the courses are available in Fall Semester. This may not be the case for Spring Semester.
  • Majority Professors get funding at the time of Fall Semester.

Can student from E&Tc apply for CS?

Student from any Engineering field can apply for Computer Science. However, relevant work experience is highly recommended for this. He will have to do pre-requisite courses before starting the regular MS course. This will increase the duration of the course as well as the cost.

How much in advance we should start preparation and how to go about:
- Appearing for GRE and TOEFL
- Financial preparedness
- Admission formalities
What are the criteria for universities like Stanford, MIT and CMU?

Ideally, he should appear for GRE in the Third Year of Engineering and TOEFL in Final Year of Engineering.
Education Loan upto Rs.35 lacs is easily available which will take care of the entire cost of education.
For admission to the top 10 Universities of America, a GRE Score of more than 330 is required. In addition to this, student also must have outstanding academic record and degree from a reputed Indian college/university.

What is the maximum duration of internship permitted?

You can do internship on CPT for up to 364 days.

Are there any universities which have MS course related to food technology/food industry?

Very few universities offer the course in Food Technology but many universities offer courses in Food Science.
